A Brief History of Appleton WI

Originally, the Ho-Chunk and Menominee tribes occupied that land that is now Appleton WI. Europeans arrived in 1847 and quickly established a fur trading post.

Appleton WI incorporated in 1857. Paper milling, hydro-electricity, and the streetcar were all great boosts to the economy. The area also holds the claim to having the first telephone in the state, as well as the first incandesent light on the East Coast.
