De Pere WI

De Pere WI is a city found in Brown County. The most recent population counts indicate that approximately 25,000 citizens call De Pere home. The close proximity to the Green Bay Metropolitan area affords De Pere WI residents access to many amenities.

A Brief History of De Pere WI

Jean Nicolet first surveyed the land that is now De Pere WI in 1635. A multilingual community developed as a result of the ample fishing opportunities along the rapids of Fox River. The year 1671 saw the establishment of the St. Francis Xavier Mission by French Jesuit explorer Pere Claude-Jean Allouez. It is also commonly called Rapides Des Pères or rapids of the fathers. 

At first, De Pere WI was comprised of the settlement situated on the east side of the Fox River. In 1890, the City of West De Pere merged with the existing east side, forming a united community. Norbertine Abbot Pennings founded St. Norbert College in 1898.

The city is home to several National Register Historic sites, including the De Pere Lock and Dam Historic District, Randall Avenue Historic District, the Edwin and Jennie Gutknecht House, and Union Hotel.
