Suamico WI

Suamico Wi is historical village located just north of Green Bay. A large part of the village sits on the shores of the great Lake Michigan. With just over 11 000 residents and plenty of liveable space, Suamico is a great place to raise a family. 

A Brief History of Suamico WI

Even though it was officially founded in 1848, Suamico has a rich history even before that. Just like most of the areas around the Great Lakes, its history is closely tied to various Native American tribes that used to inhabit these lands. Its name, Suamico, is a keepsake from those times. It translates as the place of the yellow beaver. There is discussions about the exact translation of its name, but it is still a great indicator about it is past. Suamico is considered to be an old fishing settlement but there is not much archaeological evidence to support the claim. In 2003 the Town of Suamico held a vote, and was officially incorporated into a village.

Nature lovers will love Suamico. It is surrounded by lush green forests and most of the village sits on the shores of lake Michigan. So it is no surprise that some of the most popular destinations in and around Suamico are all closely related to nature. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve is one of those site, and it attracts hundreds of locals, out-of-towners as well as visitors from other states. Its preserved, pristine nature is cure for the soul and many of the hiking trails make it very accessible to visitors. It also contains a small nature center that is right next to a lovely pond.
