Green Bay WI is county seat of Brown County in Wisconsin. The city sits at the head of the Green Bay at the mouth of Fox River. Nearly 105,000 residents call the area home, ranking it third biggest in the state after Milwaukee and Madison WI. 

A Brief History of Green Bay WI

Native American Indian tribes were the first settlers of the Green Bay WI area. Tribes included the Winnebago, Menominee, Fox, and Ojibwa. Green Bay WI earned its namesake for the color of the water in 1634 by way of Jean Nicolet’s observations. The city quickly became a fur-trading post, connecting the Fox, Wisconsin, and Mississippi rivers.

After the French and Indian War of 1754-1763, the British controlled the area until the U.S. took over following the War of 1812. The United States built Fort Howard. The Erie Canal opened in 1825, and city planning arose in the 1830s.

Today, Green Bay’s primary industries include paper-making, food processing, healthcare, trucking, agriculture, and tourism. One of Green Bay WI’s main claims to fame is Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers NFL team and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.
